What & Who is Gosha Altshuler?
Primarily it is me - Gosha Altshuler. I am the one who inspired and created the brand, and now I am that person who daily gives every part of my soul to my creation, contributing all my knowledge, skills and experience to it.
Is your perspective on fashion ever affected by your age?
Of course, it’s no wonder that your approach to work and attitude to different aspects change with years of professional experience. I continue mastering my profession every day. Being a good professional in this field means having knowledge in different aspects of this business as well. So I have to deal with finance, marketing, technology and other fields, learning all the time.
In brief description, how do you approach the business side of fashion?
It is not easy to depict it in brief, but what is really essential today is that first I must plan my work from business aspects –like finance and marketing, and only then I start designing process. These are the demands of modern industry.
How would you describe yourself as a person & artist?
I can hardly call myself an artist; I don’t have any education in this field. And I am not so good at painting. I am rather a designer, a constructor and a manager, than an artist in a full sense. And sometimes I do regret not being a skillful artist.
How did you know you wanted to be a designer, was that your first choice as a profession?
I became the one who I am today little by little, step by step. First I acquired a profession of a tailor. Then I studied clothing design. I got essential and indispensable experience while working in high-class atelier which specialized in fur and skin garments. There I completely fell in love with these materials. Later, my friends and I launched a little manufactory where I started accomplishing some designer’s work. Only after having opened my own studio I definitely settled in the position of a designer. Though even now I cut out items and even sew from time to time.
Do you have a favorite designer who inspires you? Who is that?
Of course I do. I used to admire the work of Gianfranco Ferre, today among my favorites are Tom Ford, Frida Giannini, Roland Mouret and some others. Their style is close to what I love, and their business model seams very effective to me.
Do you see an impact on fashion due to the economy change and do you feel that you have something to say with your designs?
Economic situation defines its laws in all aspects of life, not only in fashion. What I want is my design to correspond to spirit of the time, and even be ahead in some sense, but still be in demand with clients.
Tell me about your latest collection. What was your vision when you created it?
To start with I always dreamt about Cuba, wanted to visit it one day. Besides, the theme of Cuba is one of the trends of new season. Before creating my collection I read and watched a lot of materials, listened to beautiful Cuban music and musicians – Ibrahim Ferrera, Compay Segundo, Rubén González and others. And the documentary devoted to them titled «Buena Vista Social Club» became that impulse which helped to create the collection.
To be a designer, you had to undergo a lot of struggles. What was the most difficult obstacle for you when putting together your collection?
Thera are always all kinds of professional questions – will you appeal to your client, what will become a bestseller, and what will be more like a background.
What is always connected with problems in Ukraine is getting materials and accessories of good quality.
I am very grateful to my team. They are real professionals. Good team is already a half of your success!
Then goes good marketing strategy – how to introduce your product, where to advertise etc.
But all these tasks become easier with years of experience. And when you have people who support you and are real specialists – it is a new level of business.
Did you ever think you would become so successful in this fashion era? Why?
To be honest, I never really expected it. I don’t want my ego to be the center of my creative work. I rather care about my reputation as a professional and a man.
Now, has preparing for the show been hectic for you? In What way?
We definitely have got a certain level during years of work, we have certain reputation. For me and my team it is important. We must demonstrate high level every time. Our clients shouldn’t be disappointed. So this is the challenge for us during and after shows.
Who excites you the most (Celebrity) & why?
You know, I am happy that my clothing is in demand, that people wear it, live in it and with it. I absolutely don’t care if these people are famous or not, though I have some famous clients. We are all simply people of our planet.
How is your brand different from any other designer brands?
I’d say we have special emotional atmosphere. We make our clothing with soul, with feelings towards those who will wear our clothing. Plus we respect tailoring traditions, combining them with innovations, technology and modern materials.
What are your world-dominating goals for Gosha Altshuler?
Currently we want to come back to our roots and favorite materials - skin, suede and fur. Now most part of our collections will be manufactured from these materials. Little by little we want to enter on one level with such brands of this segment as JITROIS, APHERO, SERAPHIN.
